Late Just in Time

At 53, some would say it’s late to start up a music career. Sherese Chrétien would say it’s just in time.

Thanks to all of the musicians still rocking out past 50 and thanks to all of the online & DIY music technology, Chrétien maintains there couldn’t be a better time to launch her music.

“If young women who want to have a family asked my advice today, would I tell them to wait until they’re in their 50s?” She answers, “I would tell them, thanks to the internet & technology, which is only getting better and better, they can start whenever they want!”

She points out she didn’t have that choice. Since she felt she couldn’t do both well at the same time, she had to choose between being a mother and doing her music, especially touring. “If I would have had the technology back then that exists today, I would have felt like I could work music around being the mom I wanted to be,” pointing out that even live concerts can be performed online now.

Now that she’s raised “two amazing kids,” she’s making up for lost time with a unique twist on both how she makes a living with her music, definitely informed by her 30+ years in a successful career in personal, business & social development, (see Ever Entertainment® – her answer to the current state of the entertainment industry) and her approach to writing, recording & performing.

Chrétien says she didn’t lose any time observing what was happening in the entertainment business, while patiently waiting on the sidelines. “I see the music industry, and even the whole entertainment industry actually coming full circle. It’s getting back to a direct relationship between performers and their audiences, which is the most amazing thing!” She adds she just wasn’t cut out to do the path musicians have been expected to walk anyway, at least since the advent of recording. “I thank God I have a choice now to go back to making it just about sharing my music with my audience.” In regards to having all these in-between folks, she says, “Well, if a scenario meant losing creative control, I admit, in those cases, I would be charged with ‘not playing well with others.’ ”

But then, she’s just a humble storyteller, plain and simple. She’ll leave all the flash and mega-fame to others. Convinced music is an inspired gift, she’s only interested in listening and delivering the songs, the love, and the joy she is personally given to share. “I feel so blessed to be able to do music — I just want to be a blessing.”

That doesn’t mean she’ll be a pushover and do her music for nothing. Chrétien maintains that in order to do music seriously at all, you need to be able to make a living at it. And she doesn’t pull punches when saying that she plans on making a great living at it. Given her business development experience, she can’t help but identify herself as an entrepreneur rather than just a musician, and encourages all musicians to do the same.

“Technology has given us our music business back, if we’re willing to take it back,” Chrétien says. Then adds, she never let hers go. “I started performing on stage when I was 3 years old, and knew ever since – this is what I would be doing. With all this new technology available, and the business model I’ve put in place, I wish I could round up all of the 3-year-olds in the world and show them they already know how to write music and can make it their career if they want to, before anyone tells them otherwise!” She imagines a world where anyone who hears a song inside will believe in themselves and trust that song just as it is to be shared, and if it resonates with an audience — that’s all it takes. Chrétien insists if you have an audience, you can now have a music career. Throwing her arms in the air, she exclaims, “Can you imagine the music we’d get to hear?!”

Fifty years later, her insides bursting at the seams with half a lifetime of songs, Chrétien has never lost that three-year-old little girl who believes.
